Here is another free youth baseball drill. This youth baseball drill is for covering the bases on steal attempts in youth baseball. This is a very simple youth baseball drill that involves all the infield positions. This youth baseball drill will prepare your players for the steal and know how to cover the bases.
First, put a pitcher on the mound , runners at first and or second base. Place a batter in the batters box(wearing a helmet of course). We for sure do not want to get hurt during a practice drill. The batter will not be swinging so if you need to not have a batter to balance your groups that's okay too. Next, Place a player at each infield position. Including the catcher geared up behind the plate.
The remaining players will be a base running group. As move your players from infield to base runners, remind them they are a base running group. The groups will be competing to see which one can steal the most bases. This will give a competitive atmosphere for them to have fun offensively and defensively while simulating the game like situation during this youth baseball practice drill.
Pitchers work on holding the runners and delivering the ball to home plate. Pick offs should be worked on here too.
First Basemen work on holding runners and receiving throws from the pitcher and catcher. You can introduce this to the infielders with runners on base also.
Catchers work on their stance with runners on, catching the ball properly, and throwing down to the bases to try and get outs.
Infielders work on communicating the steal, getting to the bag quickly, proper footwork and glove position to receive throws from the catcher, making the tag properly(we don't want to be dropping the ball here), and backing up throws.
Base runners practice reading the pitchers, lead off, getting back(crossover step), steal break for the next base, and of course sliding.
