I was prepared for many things when I began this Weekly Walk Watch. I was ready for underinflated on-base percentages. I knew there’d be swings in the dirt, and up in the eyes, and three feet outside. And I figured there’d be very, very few walks.

What I didn’t expect was a run at history. But that’s what we’re seeing, anyway.

As pointed out by very helpful reader Travis two WWWatches ago, Ivan Rodriguez appears to hold the record for fewest walks by a batting title-qualifying batter. There was a time when participating in the mid-summer classic was something earned through one's performance, his legacy, the impact he'd had to that point in the season. However, the all-star game has slowly and tragically morphed into a meaningless vessel to exalt players whose names the most casual of fans recognize, and an ever-inclusive showcase of a once exclusive honor.

The Houston Astros-San Diego Padres game this afternoon was delayed by a swarm of nasty, man-eating bees.

According to a Padres’ representative, there were no less than 2,000 bees swarming around or inside the jacket pictured here.  The jacket apparently belongs to a ball girl stationed down the left field line.

Why the bees collected there is not known at this time, but I’m guessing it had something to do with the cheap perfume her boyfriend bought her for their 3 week anniversary.

The players were taken off the field and the stands in the area were been cleared while the situation was handled.

I’m taking a break from the Orioles today. And no, it has nothing to do with yesterday’s come-from-ahead loss to the Evil Empire Lite. It’s a coincidence. Quit buggin’ me about it.
