Youth Baseball Hitting | Youth Baseball hitting drills and tips

Batting and hitting - Improve youth..CoachMc writes "Everyone loves big hits and getting on base in youth baseball. Here are some tips from Coach Brockoff to help your youth baseball player be a better hitter.

I've studied hitters during practice practices (BP) for years and come to the same conclusion each time. Hitters who take every pitch in this manner get pops, chops, and routine ground balls with every pitch. In fact, the going rate of hard hits is three or four out of ten."

Ultimate Baseball - A great warmup or warmdown drill

Youth Baseball DrillsCoachPat writes "
Here's a competitive game/youth baseball drill your players will love that also serves as a great warm up or practice ending drill. "Ultimate Baseball" is modeled after "Ultimate" - a fast-moving team sport played with a Frisbee on a football field. The only difference in the baseball version is you play with a RIF 1 or safety-soft baseball and gloves. What makes it a great warm up drill is that you can start with as few as four players (2 on 2), and players can join in as they show up. Many of your kids are already familiar with Ultimate as it is a popular among PE teachers for it's simplicity and fun. As youth baseball coaches we are always looking for fun educational experiences for the kids. Click read more to see the drill from Coach pat and Coaching Youth baseball..

Base Running In Youth Baseball | Key Points For Great Baserunning

Coachingcoachtrev writes "BASE RUNNING
Key Points For Base Running In Youth Baseball

Base Running is very important in youth baseball. Sadly many coaches put it at the end of practice or wait till it is absolutely necessary before putting it in to practice time. There is only one thing that wins and looses ball games, and that would be runs. You cross the plate one more time than the other team at the end of the game you win.  The only way you are going to score runs in youth baseball is from running the bases and might I add running them not only aggressively, but intelligently. Nothing takes the air out of a team more than bad base running in youth baseball, it eliminates the possibility of scoring that runner and that could be and is often  the difference in the game. The statement to follow is the basic point I like to instill in base runners.."

Three Approaches to Hitting in Youth Baseball

Batting and hitting - Improve youth..coachtrev writes "

There are three different approaches to teaching hitting in youth baseball

   - Linear Hitting
   - Extension Hitting
   - Rotational Hitting

From what i have seen, Linear Hitting is what most youth baseball players are taught -- Extension Hitting is what I was taught -- and Rotational Hitting is what most major league hitters actually do.

How to hit the Ball | Youth Baseball Hitting

Batting and hitting - Improve youth..CoachMc writes "When I ask youth baseball hitters, what is the first step to get prepared to hit the ball hard? I get several different responses and for the for the most part they realize that it is something we do to get our bodies prepared to hit.  The key is when do we as youth baseball hitters do it?  I like to use a term “Early Load” and the key word is, early.  When is early?  I have a little saying, once pitchers get some where in the leg raise portion of the windup, a hitter needs to be doing something to get their body prepared to hit.  Because the hitter who is standing in the box and is not prepared will have a tough time being a successful
hitter.

The Dugout | My Kid is in the Dugout too much

CoachingCoachMc writes "The dugout is the best place to watch a game. Youth baseball players can learn a lot about the game and their opponents they are up against. As a coach or parent, you should instill a mentality that time spent in the dugout should be focused on the game of baseball.  We have all heard "new pitcher" or "watch the pitcher" , we should let all the off-field distractions fade into the background and watch all the action on the youth baseball field.
Don’t underestimate the power of observation. Youth Baseball players should take in all the information that is available and use it when it is their turn to take the field.

Here are some things youth baseball players should be looking for while in the dugout..as a coach or parent it does not hurt to remind them occasionally.

''Four Base Rundown'' - A Full Team Base Running Drill

Youth Baseball DrillsCoachPat writes "
Here is a fun and competitive full team drill that is excellent for teaching aggressive base running, which does not come naturally to young players.  There is no better drill to teach your players to round the bases, which puts them in position to take an extra base when the opportunity presents itself.  This is also great drill to finish a practice - your players won’t be able to wait for next time!  Best of all this drill works even on those early spring days when the infield is too soft for a scrimmage.  You can even do this youth baseball drill indoors in a gym during the winter months or when rain prevents practicing outside.

Here are some things to consider for an off season pitching workout to prepare for the upcoming season.

Infield Fly Rule | the Infield Fly Rule for Coaches and Parents

Youth Baseball Rules baseballmom writes "Infield Fly !  Many of us have heard Infield Fly ! called, (or not) What exactly is the infield fly rule in youth baseball? It's the same as MLB. The "In-field Fly" rule can be confusing, especially for youth baseball and youth baseball coaches and parents.
Lets take a moment to discuss the infield fly rule.
The rule is often a point of controversy among coaches, players and spectators watching the game, often times umpires. Many ask, "what is the 'In-field" fly rule? When does the "In-field Fly" baseball rule apply? Here we explain the reason for this rule of baseball, the situations under which this baseball rule applies, and some additional info to help coaches and parents of youth baseball better understand  the infield fly rule.

Why do we have the "In-field" fly rule?"

Know your Strengths and Weaknesses as a Hitter

Batting and hitting - Improve youth..Andy writes "
Every hitter has their weaknesses.  Perhaps it is a low, outside strike.  Maybe they have difficulty with anything off speed, or pitches on the inner half of the plate.  When you stop and think about it, the strike zone, from the knees to the letters, ranging from the inner half to the outer half of the plate, is a fairly large area to cover with a 32-34 inch bat.  Great hitters understand this, and they discipline themselves to lay off pitches they know they struggle with early in the count.

Successful hitters understand their strengths as well.  They understand the pitch they hit the hardest and most consistently.  For me, it was the fastball up and in.  When I saw this pitch, my eyes lit up, and I was swinging from my heels.  What is your best pitch to handle?  What pitches give you trouble?  These are very important questions you must ask yourself.  Once you know the pitches you like and dislike, you are well on your way towards developing a successful hitting plan.

 Evaluating College Recruiting Resources

CoachingAndy writes "
The amount of recruiting resource available to student-athletes can be overwhelming.  If you type college recruiting into any internet search engine, you will easily be bombarded with hundreds of different resources aimed at helping student athletes in the college recruiting process.  These resources include elite showcases, college camps, summer exposure travel teams, and college recruiting services.  However, does the existence of these resources make college recruiting easier to understand?  Do all of these services provide each student-athlete with a greater chance of achieving success in the recruiting process compared to past generations when few of these resources existed?  Does the cost of these recruiting resources justify their benefits?

Must Have Guide For Every High School baseball Player
Who Is Serious About Getting Recruited To Play At the College Level

While there are certainly a greater amount of recruiting resources available to today’s student athletes, I would argue that their existence has caused greater confusion about the process, in addition to thousands of dollars wasted.  Many families are also unclear as to how to properly utilize these available resources, a fact that further hinders student athletes from being successful with this process.

Not only do perspective college recruits and their families need to be educated about the recruiting process in general, but they also need to understand the truth behind all of these recruiting resources and their limitations in order to avoid destructive traps that can take student-athletes off the correct path.

Interference and Obstruction | Little League Interference and or Obstruction

Youth Baseball Rules CoachMc writes "One of the most confusing and controversial aspects of baseball is a situation where a defensive and offensive player either collide or interfere with each other. We have seen many angry coaches and parents over not understanding the rules of interference and obstruction in youth baseball. Also, Many youth baseball umpires do not have full understanding of all the rules. I'm not sure anyone does. But I would consider youth baseball interference and obstruction a common play occurrence that coaches and umpires should know and be able to explain.

Youth Baseball DrillsCoachMc writes "Youth Baseball Drills | Cutoffs

We should try and split our players into groups for the biggest part of our practice section. It is much easier for coaches  to provide youth baseball instruction with youth baseball drills with just a few players instead of the whole team.  It is also much better for the players, they get more repetitions for each skill more quickly and their attention span is held more easily.

However we need to have a full field on the field with base runners to teach cutoffs in youth baseball
