Coaching Youth Baseball | 4 Concepts for Coaching Youth Baseball
coachtrev writes "On the surface the real job of a baseball coach seems easy to
identify, win baseball games. Put the right players in the right
positions, build team chemistry, and motivate them to win. However
difficult building a championship caliber team may be, it?s only one of
the jobs a baseball coach has. In fact, it should be the last task on
the coach?s list. When I first began coaching, I made the mistake of
thinking that I was teaching how to play baseball. I was wrong! What I
should have been doing was setting an example and teaching kids how to
build a foundation to be successful in life. I learned that during every
practice, and every game you have the distinct opportunity to make an
impact on you players.

Using a video camera in youth baseball for coaches and players
CoachMc writes "
Youth Baseball Coaches should use a video camera as much as
possible, especially in youth baseball hitting drills and youth baseball
pitching drills.
Letting the players see themselves take a few swings
or pitch in slow motion and/or frame by frame is the only way to go if
you are really looking to break down mechanics properly. "

Coaching Youth Baseball | Why Have a Fun Youth Baseball Practice
coachtrev writes "Lets bring recreational baseball back. By recreational baseball I am talking about coaching youth baseball in local leagues, not the select traveling teams. Don't get me wrong, in coaching youth baseball, I have coached many local league teams and travel youth baseball teams. Both my sons play on travel teams. But, there is a difference in local youth baseball and select youth baseball.
Local communities and their recreational youth baseball teams are a vital part of our society. What can we as youth baseball coaches do for the programs and why?

Base Running In Youth Baseball | Key Points For Great Baserunning
coachtrev writes "BASE RUNNING Key Points For Base Running In Youth Baseball
Base Running is very important in youth baseball. Sadly many coaches put it at the end of practice or wait till it is absolutely necessary before putting it in to practice time. There is only one thing that wins and looses ball games, and that would be runs. You cross the plate one more time than the other team at the end of the game you win. The only way you are going to score runs in youth baseball is from running the bases and might I add running them not only aggressively, but intelligently. Nothing takes the air out of a team more than bad base running in youth baseball, it eliminates the possibility of scoring that runner and that could be and is often the difference in the game. The statement to follow is the basic point I like to instill in base runners.."

The Dugout | My Kid is in the Dugout too much
CoachMc writes "The dugout is the best place to watch a game. Youth baseball players can learn a lot
about the game and their opponents they are up against. As a coach or
parent, you should instill a mentality that time spent in the dugout
should be focused on the game of baseball. We have all heard "new pitcher" or "watch the pitcher" , we should let all the off-field
distractions fade into the background and watch all the action on the youth baseball field.
Don’t underestimate the power of observation. Youth Baseball players should take in all the
information that is available and use it when it is their turn to take the field.
Here are some things youth baseball players should be looking for while in the dugout..as a coach or parent it does not hurt to remind them occasionally.

The amount of recruiting resource available to student-athletes can be overwhelming. If you type college recruiting into any internet search engine, you will easily be bombarded with hundreds of different resources aimed at helping student athletes in the college recruiting process. These resources include elite showcases, college camps, summer exposure travel teams, and college recruiting services. However, does the existence of these resources make college recruiting easier to understand? Do all of these services provide each student-athlete with a greater chance of achieving success in the recruiting process compared to past generations when few of these resources existed? Does the cost of these recruiting resources justify their benefits?
While there are certainly a greater amount of recruiting resources available to today’s student athletes, I would argue that their existence has caused greater confusion about the process, in addition to thousands of dollars wasted. Many families are also unclear as to how to properly utilize these available resources, a fact that further hinders student athletes from being successful with this process.
Not only do perspective college recruits and their families need to be educated about the recruiting process in general, but they also need to understand the truth behind all of these recruiting resources and their limitations in order to avoid destructive traps that can take student-athletes off the correct path.

Over Coaching Youth Baseball | Let them play baseball!
coachtrev writes "Most coaches, especially those coaching youth baseball at the younger levels tend to insert themselves into the youth baseball game more than is necessary. We do not have to be teaching or calling all the shots at every opportunity that becomes available. This is what we call over coaching and gives our youth baseball players too much information to process , thus they do not perform to the best of their ability.
The best coaches resist the urge to teach constantly (that is what a coach basically is..a teacher). They especially try to resist during the heat of competition. As youth baseball coaches we should observe, make mental notes, put our observations on paper, then teach during practice. This is the time our kids are best at absorbing and using the information.

We all want to win but losing in youth baseball is going to happen. As coaches we can make sure our young players are at least doing the right things and learning from any mistakes.

Runners on first and third - Defense for runners on first and third base
CoachMc writes "With runners on first and third many coaches just give second base to the runner on first. There are ways to combat runners on first and third and different strategies to attack runners on first and third. Most coaches just simply let the runner steal second on the basis of not making an error and/or giving up a run. This is not wrong, if this is the coaches strategy. But there are other defenses. "

Coaching Youth Baseball and Communication
coachtrev writes "A youth baseball coach spends many hours as a volunteer. A few hours a week practicing, games, before game preparation, after game reviews, administrative meetings - arghh. The youth baseball coach usually has an assistant, and hopefully a couple of volunteers to help. As a coach or asst., and or a helpful parent, as a youth baseball coach you still must have ideals and knowledge of the game. You can reinforce and develop your own values(which might need to be adjusted), based on other coaches and parents conversation. "
